Leaks and storms
What do I do when water comes through the ceiling?
Switch off the light or fitting near the water, place a container under the drip and call (833) 751-2102. Photograph the stain with the date.
Why is the stain not above the leak?
Water travels along rafters and boards before it drops, so the stain can be several feet from the entry point. The attic is read to find the source.
Does a heavy day of rain show faults a dry year hides?
Yes. Outlets, valleys and flashing carry the full flow of a heavy day, and joints that were fine in a light rain can open.
Licence and cover
What licence does a roofer need in California?
The C-39 roofing classification from the Contractors State License Board. The number can be checked on the board's website.
Does a roofer with no employees need workers' compensation?
A C-39 roofer must carry workers' compensation coverage even with no employees, according to the board's 2018 newsletter.
Materials and the attic
Why does metal corrode faster near the coast?
Salt holds moisture against the metal and starts corrosion at the fixings and the cut edges. The face of the metal can look sound while the back is failing.
Why is the attic hot in summer?
The attic has no path for air, or the intake is blocked. The heat from the covering then builds up beneath it, and the technician clears or adds the vents.
Can clay tile be walked on?
Only from the ridge and the boards, and only by a technician. The tiles break under a person's weight, and a fall from a tile roof is serious.
